Hey, did you know that the NBA Referees just screwed over another non-Laker team?

It's true! I'll give you a second to process that.

Okay, now this wasn't as egregious as previous situations (2002 Western Conference Finals, 2006 NBA Finals.) The Magic hit their free throws? It would be a 2-2 series. But they didn't. So the game went to overtime.

But, when you have a superstar like Kobe Bryant who...shall we say, has a bit of Bruce Bowen in him?

The referees allow that to happen. He aims his elbow in the general direction of other peoples head and does not get called for it. And tonight? It allowed for a dagger to be plunged into the heart of the Magic. Jameer has to get new dental work. Pietrus will get some form of punishment, the Lakers get a tainted win.

And that's the shame. This was a classic. At least it was until the referees stuck their head in it.

Bah. Bah I say.

The AL Central will be hard to predict.

Every team can contend for the division. Every team could finish last. There's a real chance that we could see another division where last is within ten games of first. Watch me be wrong...

NOW!

1. Cleveland (Should have the bullpen figured out. Should have a healthier offense. Do have the horses to try and make a big bold move should the time come. They're imperfect, but they have the best chance at this division.)
2. Chicago (You know the deal here. The offense will be good. Guillen will be crazy. And one pitching injury will sink the Southsiders.)
3. Minnesota (They just don't have the offensive horses to roll up on you. They have a strong rotation even without Baker. But they will get no support. Thus? Third.)
4. Detroit (The rotation is something people don't like to talk about. It is the beast under your bed. They have Verlander. But they have nothing else. Literally. They called me. I have the phone records to prove it.)
5. Kansas City (I believe in Alex Gordon. I believe in the offense in general. They will outperform projections. But when you have Sidney Ponson and Horacio Ramirez in your rotation? Any dreams of contention fall by the wayside.)

When Disaster Strikes...

Is not just the name of the seminal Busta Rhymes album. It could be what happens to the Brewers in these next few months. I mean, let me tell you a story of what could happen.

A. The Brewers miss the playoffs. This means the player to be named later in the Sabathia trade will be the Brewers choice, and likely a man of no consequence.

B. The Yankees cull Bobby Abreu and Carl Pavano from the payroll, and use the balance to take C.C. Sabathia as the Angels sleep.

C. Ed Wade does his best Jerry Jones and his boy Sheetsie gets 5 years and 70 million.

D. The Brewers do not want to be too splashy in terms of free agency. It's a big year, but the Brewers aren't gonna try and get above 80 million dollars if they don't have to.

And let's be honest, I am going to make estimates based on precedent and other details in terms of contract. But the fundamentals will be sound.

And so? A journey of a wannabe GM begins...now.

Returning Payroll: Here's where it begins. What cost the Brewers about 35.5 million in 2008 is going to become prohibitively expensive. Fielder starts arbitration, Suppan, Hall, J.J. Hardy, Bush, Corey Hart and maybe even the versatility of the Ginger McClung will all receive million dollar-plus raises. You aren't going to see it double, but 26.5 million dollars later? The Brewers stand at 62 million dollars.

Options exercised? CF Mike Cameron ($10,000,000 +3 million dollars from 2008); INF Craig Counsell ($3,400,000 +600 thousand dollars from 2008 and it hurts because he sucks.)

Free Agents Re-Signed? LOOGY Brian Shouse ($2,200,000 +200 thousand dollars from 2008); OF Gabe Kapler ($1,000,000 +200 thousand dollars from 2008); 3B Russell Branyan ($750,000 +350 thousand dollars from 2008).

So now we stand at $66,200,000. If the Brewers sign no other free agents, here's your 25-man roster.

C- Jason Kendall
C- Mike Rivera
1B- Prince Fielder
2B- Rickie Weeks
3B- Russell Branyan
SS- J. J. Hardy
IF- Billy Hall
IF- Craig Counsell
LF- Ryan Braun
CF- Mike Cameron
RF- Corey Hart
OF- Gabe Kapler
OF- Tony Gwynn

SP- Manny Parra
SP- Yovani Gallardo
SP- Jeff Suppan
SP- Dave Bush
SP- Seth McClung

RP- Mark DiFelice
RP- Luis Pena
RP- Tim Dillard
RP- Brian Shouse
RP- Carlos Villanueva
RP- David Riske

CL- Salomon Torres

So what do the Brewers need? Obvious need is obvious. Pitching. And as for that I do have a premise as to how the Brewers can generate some pitching.

Trade Prince Fielder

I know, it sounds crazy. But he's still team controlled for another couple of years, and with Scott Boras in tow, there's no chance that he'll give Milwaukee a year of his Free Agency for an extension. So, expect the Brewers to quietly shop Fielder this offseason. A likely scenario? The Angels lose Teixera via Free Agency. The Brewers quietly swoop in and get a young starter from the Angels for Fielder. We'll call him Joe saunders. So we'll move Gamel to first base and we'll do the Bruss Brall at third.

So now where are we? 23.8 million dollars.

Move #1: Sign Juan Cruz (3 years/9 million dollars)

Juan Cruz is a power pitcher. Juan Cruz generates a lot of strike outs. He can have his issues with lefties, however? He is a righty killer. I think his issues with lefthanders may keep his price down, but a savvy manager of bullpens can keep him as an ace 7th inning guy/righty killer.

Move #2: Sign Bartolo Colon (1 year/1.25 million Team option for 2010 at 2 million)

But with a twist. You make Bartolo Colon a middle reliever/closer candidate. His limited time as a Red Sock last year shows that he has an ability to pitch. But as a starter he'll fall apart. So, you sign him as a middle reliever with incentive bonuses and hope he's another Eckersley or Kerry Wood.

Move #3: Three million dollars for veteran starting pitcher reclamation projects.

There are plenty of options in the injured starter who showed talents previously. Obvious Mark Prior is obvious. But here's what I'm thinking. Show me something in a Chris Capuano, a Mark Mulder, and a Russ Ortiz and hope one of them hit.

Move #4 Sign Joe Nathan (3 years/39 million dollars)

Perhaps this is colored by yesterdays taint punch of a collapse, but Joe Nathan may actually prove to have some value in the new economy. The Brewers are going to be contenders, or at the very least close to contention, jumping on the Joe Nathan bandwagon with all deliberate speed while everybody's all fired up for the twisted steel and sex appeal of Fransisco Rodriguez? You can get good value.

And in these five moves? Your Milwaukee Brewers are ready for battle in 2009.

New 2009 Roster?

C- Kendall
C- Rivera
1B- Mat Gamel
2B- Weeks
3B- Branyan
SS- Hardy
IF- Hall
IF- Counsell
LF- Braun
CF- Cameron
RF- Hart
OF- Kapler
OF- Gwynn

SP- Parra
SP- Gallardo
SP- Suppan
SP- Bush
SP- McClung/Russ Ortiz/Chris Capuano/Mark Mulder

RP- Bartolo Colon
RP- Juan Cruz
RP- Brian Shouse
RP- Salomon Torres
RP- Carlos Villanueva
RP- David Riske

CL- Joe Nathan

And with JJ Hardy, Mike Cameron, and Jason Kendall as trade bait as some of the Huntsville 8 show off their readiness? It's a beautiful thing.

Antonio Bryant...

Is the #2 Receiver in Tampa Bay.

But you know what? The other Biletnikoff winner as a Sophomore has been flying under the radar in other ways as well. Did you know he was out of football last year? You did? Okay.

But did you know that he sued the NFL? It's true!

It seems as after 2006's impression of Bullitt that he ran in San Mateo, Antonio took his two game suspension and he took being cut, and decided that he was going to look into the mirror and make some changes. He was 26, and he had run himself off three teams already. He stopped taking his life seriously for most of the first half of the year of his unemployment.

But he looked in the mirror and realized what he needed to do. So he started to turn his life around. Antonio Bryant, finally, finally, was ready to reach his seemingly limitless potential. I know that it's his seventh chance, but the fact that he got there before it was too late.

And yet? He found himself with a problem. When he was ready to return to football, and sure that there was some team out there who needed his skills? The NFL wouldn't let him back in.

And this news bore little mention. You live in a world with Pac-Man Jones, Chris Henry, and Brandon Marshall acting a fool, and you have a player fighting with every ounce he has to keep the dream alive. And he gets no media attention.

This baffles me. Kind of. The sports media is whiter than Stuff White People Like. Antonio Bryant's preconceived notions have been set in stone. They're waiting for him to get into all sorts of shenanigans involving Heroin, a dude named Mendoza, and a fanboat chase.

I guess what I'm saying is this wouldn't happen if Stephen A. Smith was alive.

So, you know what?

I fell out of love hard with my Fantasy Football team last year. I fell out of love with Fantasy Football too. But you know what the problem was? I was too shitty to not land a good running back. That's 2007.

2008? In 2008 my team became patriotic. And in 2008? My team might hopefully be good. And seeing nothing in my head? I'll explain my situation.

Quarterbacks:

Ben Roethlisberger: The fifth round quarterback who was 1) The last quarterback on the second tier. 2) In a system where you need a good quarterback to have a shot. 3) A quarterback too dumb to know that he was facing such a sadistic schedule.

Matt Schaub: If he and Andre Johnson last 16 games? Matt Schaub will be a worthy starter. For a 10th-round draft pick? He's fine value.

Running Backs

LaDainian Tomlinson: Lucky for me, the team with the #1 pick had Purple Jesus as a lone highlight from last season. So, I drafted Tomlinson with a pensive confidence. Obvious decision is obvious.

Brandon Jacobs: Now, this is the pick that could cause me some consternation. Multiple talented back-ups, a bit of the injury prone. Passing on Drew Brees or Andre Johnson. But you know what? If he gets 10 scores, none of that matters.

Willis McGahee: Yeah, the Ravens seem lame offensively. But you know what? Cam Cameron has made plenty of bad offenses have stud running backs. Shit, Ronnie Brown had 1000 yards of total offense in 7 games. And McGahee seems better, right?

Ray Rice: Obvious handcuff is obvious.

LaMont Jordan: If 2007 was any indication, The Patriots don't want Maroney to poud the rock on the goal line. Sammy Morris had all the goal line touches in 2007. And considering that Jordan is now an ex-Raider, his skills are much better. Even if he's merely a vulture/back-up.

Wide Receivers

Santonio Holmes: Best receiver available in round four and oh my God he's in his 3rd season, isn't he? There's interesting potential there.

Dwayne Bowe: Best case? He has double figure TD's on the rare occasions that they actually need to go to the goal line. Worst case? The truth is adjusted and he's really Michael Clayton.

Anthony Gonzalez: Marvin Harrison is a broken man. I sincerely believe that he will be the #2 and get more stats than Marhar Superstar.

Santana Moss: Best case scenario? I only have to use him when they play the Rams. Worst case scenario? He's still a #1 receiver. And a west coast offense may make him interesting.

Josh Morgan: Home run swing who's most likely to get cut for a bye-week replacement.

Tight Ends

Tony Scheffler: Obvious breakout candidate is obvious.

Zach Miller: By default, he is the #1 receiver in Oakland. Young quarterbacks rely on their tight ends. He's got a shot at 150 targets.

Defense

Seattle Seahawks: Best value when I went to draft them. They're imperfect, but they'll win you a game or two. This teams tigerstyle is solid. In the 12th round? It works.

Kicker

Mike Nugent: I was going to take Brandon Coutu here, but as the rumors went, Holmgren is going to idiotically take Olindo Mare as his kicker. And seeing as I would draft in the 16th round? I took the best kicker available.

All in all? Brandon Jacobs and my two starting receivers are the keys. If they do what I expect. (Which is solidly.) I'm fine.

If not? I apologize in advance. Sorry.

English Comedy and the Packers...

What? These are similar? YES.

How so? I'm not in love with most of the genre. I know what it sounds like. The Green Bay Packers are a genre? It's melodrama.

The quarterback loves the team no more. And yet he's ready to come back. But wait! He's not! But Greta Van Sustren says otherwise.

And now Ari Fliescher! I guess the Packers are now offically fair and balanced. Yeah. Boo. That joke was bad.

Which brings us to English Comedy. We like Flight of the Conchords. We like Most of Simon Pegg's work. But good English Comedy is like good moments this Packers offseason.

Our 2nd pick is a third-stringer. Our offseason boiled down into as Brett Favre turns, and I'm not alone in being sick of it.

But you know what? My outrage has run out. I'm not gonna go oldboy on oldboy.

I didn't want to have to do this, but y'all leave me no choice...

Brett Favre. I know where I was when he came back to beat the Bengals. I know where he was when he finally got the duke against the Cowboys. I know where I was when he first talked of retirement...in 2002.

This is why I knew this was going to happen. I knew we couldn't go through a spring and summer without any Brett Favre baby QB1 drama. And the fact is? I was sick and tired of it two years ago. This is wearing on my got damn last nerve.

Brett screwed Brett.

The stupidest thing he did was retire. By far and flat out. See, here's the thing, we did not care about the 27 conflicting off-season Mort reports in the great state of Wisconsin. We had our boy Favre. And he was more golden than a fellational Peter King column.

Because he came back. He always came back. But he decided to quit it. Indecision was a way for him to have the Packers fawn over him. Hick Hamlet suited him. But now?

Now everybody's reading between the lines. And the subtext is annoying. He retired to get out of Green Bay because he couldn't handle the cold anymore. That's my read on the situation. Favre retired because he was not man enough to say he was unhappy.

We would have been hurt. And yet? We would have been able to work through it. We've done it before in Wisconsin. We'll do it again. We're lovable doormats.

Do you still love me? Maybe.

Not to say that the Packers couldn't have shown that they've had any level of balls outside of the draft room. I mean in 2005, after his worst year by far, the Packers had a 36 year-old who was more coquettish than a ingenue on her first audition. They could have pulled a band aid and released Favre with minimal repriesal. We know what would have happened in 2007 and how awesome he was.

But that's 20/20 hindsight. And now? They've got a diva who wants his release. Now I'll admit it, the Packers are playing this perfectly. Favre screwed up, and the Packers have him drawing essentially dead. He can be as big of a distraction as he wants to be?

The Packers are used to this shit.

Have you ever found yourself working a Beer Tent?

You learn to hate drunken idiots. You don't need constant exposure to Mike Vanderjagt for that shit. Just get enough white trash together to get drunk and listen to a cover band, and you're golden.

But in Wisconsin? You get professional drunks, and you get professional idiots. Now those of you versed in Blogfrica know all about Pee Your Pants for the Brewers. That's 100% idiocy.

Bring Back Brett Favre is gonna be close. Now, at least this is not a motive of pure profitmaking. However, I have several questions for the brethren of leadership.

1. Do you think Brett Favre is going to be at the level that he was in 2007?

2. Do you think that he wants to come back and play for the Pack?

3. Do you think that him not feeling the love is something that's anybody's fault but his own?

4. Do you think Aaron Rodgers is going to be a bust?

I'm not saying that wanting Brett Favre back is a sin. I'm not saying that rallyinhg for your hero is problematic. I'm just saying you need to be realistic about this thing. Favre's just as bad as Thompson.

I hate this situation. I hate having to say this. But there are no goddamn heroes here. And I would rather shoot myself in the head if I have to do another one of these posts.

Ummm...

What is this? Really? It's not hip hop. It's not comedy.

This is the a Homeric Fail.
